3D Avant-Garde

Final assignment for DSGN 103 (3D Design)

Assignment Brief: Choose one principle of design covered in class and create an in the round sculpture or project that exemplifies this principle. At least three elements of design covered in class must be utilized in the finished project, this may be a solo or partner project.

I knew that I wanted to make some kind of sculptural Avante Garde garment but I wasn’t sure what its theme should be until I was asked to work with a partner. My Partner (Maia Rowland, pictured wearing the final garment) is an Alice in Wonderland Enthusiast and suggested some kind of coat or jacket inspired by the nonsensical vibe of the story, which then led to the idea of mimicking something the Mad Hatter would wear but incorporating motifs from various other aspects of the story. I then sketched some options, making our principle of design Asymmetry, and the various props and notions adorning the jacket utilized line, mass and volume. Maia, being a set designer and scenic painter, made the exaggerated playing cards, wire roses, felt rabbit, clay stopwatch and wire shoulder piece while I patterned and sewed the coat.

WIP of the Coat fully constructed before any props, notions or paint were added.
